It’s been a little while since I posted so I thought I’d post a quick overview of what I’ve been up to over the last few weeks. I’ll try to get back to posting more soon – real life just gets in the way of things sometimes! Sorry to everyone who’s been waiting for a post though.

New Kitchen

I’ve been redoing my kitchen over the last few weeks and have decided to replace all of my appliances at the same time. The new kitchen is fully installed and is fantastic, but all my old appliances were ruining the style. So far I’ve bought a new kettle (a Philips energy efficient model – it’s great) and a coffee maker (essential for me and my family) but I’m still trying to get a matching toaster, microwave and other appliances. Not the most exciting news but it’s been taking up a lot of my time over the last few weeks!

Swimming

I’ve really got into swimming over the last few weeks. Unlike other forms of exercise, such as running, I actually find swimming quite relaxing even though it gives a good cardio workout. Apparently you shouldn’t just do swimming because it doesn’t stress the bones, meaning that they don’t get stronger over time, but for cardio there isn’t much better. I’ve also just bought some waterproof headphones to use while swimming to make it more fun.

So as you can tell it hasn’t been a very exciting few weeks but at least it’s been eventful! As I said before I’ll try to update the blog more often from now on.

After my last political post I’m going back to normal for this one! I’ve recently started thinking about taking up yoga – everyone seems to go on about how good it is for you and I could definitely use some exercise. I’ve done it a couple of times so I’m under no illusion that it’s “easy” – I think I’d struggle with just a beginners course at the moment, but maybe I’m underestimating myself!

The main question is which type of yoga I want to do. I know a lot of people like the relaxing types of yoga, but I prefer the ones which give you a proper workout and really help with flexibility. I think in the long run these provide more benefit than the calmer ones – even though they probably sound a lot more tempting.

My local gym runs a lot of classes for people of all standards so I think that’s where I’ll start looking. I might even go in and visit one of the yoga teachers to see which ones type they recommend for me. I want to avoid the one where the room is heated to high temperatures – that doesn’t sound very pleasant and apparently it can be dangerous to some people! I’m sure I’d be fine, but best to stay on the safe side – at least while I’m starting out.

I try to avoid political topics on this blog as much as possible, but with the death of Osama bin Laden yesterday I thought I have to make a post about it. I think it’s good news – he is responsible for a huge number of deaths to innocent people around the world – but I think the way it was celebrated by some people in America is way over the top.

Whenever something bad happens in America you regularly get footage on the news of small groups of people from the Middle East celebrating and proclaiming that America deserved it. If Americans then do this in return, surely they are just as bad? Obviously it is slightly different, but for people to rejoice in anyone’s death just doesn’t feel right.

I want to be clear that I don’t think he didn’t deserve it, because he definitely did and I’m happy that he is dead. I just think that the way it’s been celebrated hasn’t been right and we should be above the chants of “USA, USA”.

It’ll be very interesting to hear exactly how he had managed to stay in Pakistan in the same place for so long. Some reports are saying he’s been there for over six years. Considering how close the compound is to a Pakistan military base, I don’t see how he could have survived there for so long without anyone realising.

There’s something about mobile phone shops that I really don’t get on with. Maybe it’s the constant pressure to buy something, or the way the shop is often silent when you walk in as you’re tracked by endless members of staff. Maybe it’s just that the sparse design means there’s not really much to look at anyway, or maybe it’s because the staff generally (but not always) seem to be very pushy. Whatever the reason, here are the things I’d do to improve phone shops.

I’d make the shop a little less sparse. The days of Apple shops, which generally have barely anything in them, being “cool” has gone. It’s about time phone shops realised this and started to put more products in the shop to provide greater variety.

Make each phone live and testable. I hate it when you go in to test out a phone but it’s only a fake screen. I understand it would be difficult to make every phone a live and working example, but it would definitely help when trying to choose a new phone.

Teach the staff that sometimes people just want to browse the phones and be left to their own devices!

Those are my suggestions, what would you do to try and improve mobile phone shops? I’m sure there are a lot of things I’ve missed – and these points are hardly just related to phone shops – but they are the stores that annoy me the most.
